The Winners!

It gives me huge pleasure to announce the winners and the four runners up in each age group category for The Great Kiwi Poster Competition 2023.

Our three highly experienced judges had an extremely tough time working through the almost 200 eligible entries as the overall quality was amazingly high this year!  I really wish we could reward more people for their outstanding efforts!

A huge 'Thank You" to everyone who entered, our judges, our individual sponsors on Give A Little and our  major sponsors - Phantom Bill Stickers, Hell PizzaNew Zealand's Biological Heritage and Our Climate Declaration as well as support from The Valley Project in Otepoti (Dunedin) and Tuhura (Otago Museum).

There will be an exhibition of the winning posters and the runners up in each section at the Museum in February 2024 and of course the four winning posters will also be pasted up around the main cities of Aotearoa by our most excellent sponsor, Phantom BillStickers

(Bruce Mahalski - For The Great Kiwi Poster Competition).

Adult Winner - Leoni Joubert

Judged by Michel Tuffery

Beautiful abstract composition which kept me looking right around the image - would it make me stop "Yes" because there's enough visual imagery content that is self-explanatory and the way the artist has incorporated interesting elements to draw one into the message regardless of limited use in the palette. The placement of fonts enhance, it flows. It will work at any scale A4 through toA1, A0 or larger still. Strong composition.

The composition works, the banner signage, the box’s of visual solutions is a great idea, shows diversity in the demographic of different human beings conversing about solutions, you made this poster fun with your colour palette and simple stylised human forms again for all ages to relate to core message.

The composition works well, a lot of fun looking at all solutions and activities going on in the composition. Highly relatable and appreciate the hand drawn qualities including the font, which holds the overall message.

Bronwyn Copeland

The composition works really well, centralised the portrait with fauna growing out hair works and using the awa “river“ help make a connection with the form. the feather pointing to the message above drew my attention above with raw organic fonts the more I looked at the poster I had imagined what it would look like in A1 size poster? Great to see handmade poster with real brush marks.

Senior Winner - Cindy Huang

Judged by Michel Tuffery

This poster is very simple and straight to the point, the creator has used a diverse range reflecting who our community is, making it highly relatable to the audience. The usage of very simple illustrations and colour palette keeps your attention to the centre, the visual message and solutions are all there, of collective solution being necessary. The fonts don't detract, so well balanced with the visual imagery, excellent synergy and it offers clear message to have a wider conversation. would it make me stop "Yes". It will work at any scale A4 through toA1, A0 or larger still. Strong composition.

I thought conceptually this is strong in the use of the little blue penguin, popping with colour vs the black & white background. Suggesting the fonts could be bolder to hold more prominence for message to balance with the central image. Well done

Morgan Alley

The composition works, the message of having two choices, the bold fonts that are central in the poster draws your eyes to the simple images corresponding to each other makes you think we have choices? Enjoyed the hands elements at top of whare corresponding to solutions. Bold use of palette.

The message is simple yet emotionally strong here, with global warming threatening extinction of species. Beautifully hand painted in dry brushed acrylics, the overall design, illustration, type placement and rendering are very pleasing and works beautifully as a poster.

Sarah Rynhart

Strong design well executed using digital media. Clever use of the portal in the tree as a magical space with planet Earth- pinpointing the Southern Hemisphere. A sophisticated and pleasing rendering showing what we have lost in birdlife (now extinct) and some hope for the future with sustainability.

Sarah Rynhart

Riwon Kim

This has a strong message about the peril of not taking our future seriously, sitting back and eating popcorn as large scale industry destroys the eco system. This poster makes you feel accountable and question your own action- or lack of it. Good use of watercolour and the more you look, the more there is to see. Note to the artist, check your spelling!

Leila Cook

There are plenty of solutions presented in this digitally rendered design. Windfarms, cycling, refillable water bottles, locally sourced organic food, discussion at the café table. Diversity, nature, textures and motifs of Aotearoa appear and I love the posters on the café walla nice touch! This is a strong hopeful poster for our future.

Harper Kelly

A strong visual image, cleverly creating people and nature as one and offering some practical solutions to create change. Hand rendered and great use of the koru patterning to create a bold poster.

Junior Winner - Maria Sagidullina

Judged by Kezia Field

Sophisticated usage of wet media with a strong painterly approach within the whole composition. Powerful focal point where the viewer’s eye moves directly to the sun through the excellent placement of the sun and horizoning line of the ocean. The strong Maori motif around the whole artwork allows the image to have its own frame. Conceptually powerful messaging: this stunning artwork gives us hope and visually shows Manaakitanga about the future of a planet.

Excellent arrangement of the subject matter with a clever usage of black and white imagery while contrasting the central colour area of the artwork. This colour combination creates a powerful impact for the viewer. Strong control of the media and excellent understanding of basic visual elements. Powerful messaging through the excellent understanding of the compositional convention: scale and spatial illusion.

Ysabella Stokes

Love this palette (colour combination) and bold, powerful lettering with strong cultural symbolism. The eye easily moves through the artwork due to the excellent placement of the subject matter while leading the imagery into the background of the composition with the strong silhouette of the penguin. Clear understanding of depth and perspective.

Lucas Shenghan

Excellent contrasting palette that shows strong conception thinking with a vibrant, clear and powerful visual message. Clear understanding of media and basic compositional elements with the divided line in the middle of the artwork. This creates a strong visual impact within the whole composition. Strong technical drawing skills and visual impact with the lettering of the title.

Lucas Shenghan

Mia Chenyu Zhou

This work has strong design conventions and elements with the beautiful organic shapes beyond the main foreground subject the penguin. Clear understanding of basic (observational) proportions of the penguin and I love the clever usage of the main subject matter within the negative shape of the penguin.
